Be present in the moment and adopt a mindset of openness and curiosity.

It's meaning

Be present and
in the moment.

Learning to listen means actively and intentionally paying attention to what someone is saying and attempting to understand their perspective, experiences, and emotions. It requires being present in the moment and setting aside personal biases or preconceptions. When we learn to listen, we are able to build better relationships, gain new insights, and expand our understanding of the world around us. Listening to learn takes this a step further by approaching listening as an opportunity for growth and education. It involves actively seeking out perspectives that may be different from our own and being open to learning from them. This means asking questions, seeking clarification, and engaging in respectful dialogue

Why do it

Broaden our
understanding.
Deepen our
empathy.

When we listen to learn, we broaden our understanding of the world, deepen our empathy and compassion, and become more effective communicators and problem-solvers. It’s about developing the skills to be an effective listener, while listening to learn is about adopting a mindset of openness and curiosity that values the perspectives and experiences of others. Both are important for building strong relationships, developing a deeper understanding of the world, and fostering personal growth.

You don't need to
buy a candle to
be a part of this movement.

Be present and attentive – focus your attention on what someone is saying, avoid distractions, show interest in the conversation by making eye contact and nodding. Practice active listening – pay attention to what is being said, ask questions to develop a deeper understanding. Be open-minded – approach people and conversation with a willingness to learn. Put aside any biases and listen with an open and curious attitude. Practice empathy – Try to understand their perspective, recognize and acknowledge other’s feelings and experiences. Seek feedback – be receptive to constructive criticism and then make an effort to incorporate it.

How it started

20 years in
the making.

20 years
in the
making.

When I was younger, I use to attend basketball camps at Michigan State University, and it was there that legendary Head Coach, Tom Izzo would tell all of us, to learn to listen and listen to learn. I’ve carried that quote with me throughout my life and it has a profound impact on my upbringing and now it’s my challenge to everyone else to adopt this mindset and become more curious and empathetic toward others.
